Pumpkin Carving

The tradition continues........
But, it was only 2 kids and not 8 carving pumpkins this year.  So bittersweet!   The time goes by so fast.......

Yes, Jade's face is painted.  The high school let them dress up for Halloween.
She did her own makeup!  It looks great!

Pumpkin Patch

I love Fall!!  Its my favorite time of the year.  The weather, the colors, the pumpkins, the anticipation of the holidays.  What's NOT to like?  Well, taking your teenagers to the pumpkin patch is what not to like.  No joke!   I look forward to the pumpkin patch every year.  I keep thinking that my kids are still younger than 10 and like the pumpkin patch too.  Wrong?  Bad idea!!

This year, we went to The Banducci Family Pumpkin Patch, it is located
about 5 miles from the house.  One of the perks of living in Central California
among the fields.  The family grows them out on the farm behind their
house.  They are not trucked in but hand picked and put on display.

I took 3 out of the 4 kids practically kicking and screaming all the way there but I did get
some decent pictures and a few pumpkins!!!

Mayonnaise

Holy Mayonnaise Batman!!  I can't believe.  It can't be that easy. No way!

So here in the Mendenhall household I am trying to change or tweak a few things in our food consumption.

I have been reading about mayo and how to make it at home.  I've been very skeptical and didn't want to try it.  I am not a big mayo person but some in my crew here would practically eat it out of the jar!  I know, gross!

This is the brand of choice in our house.  It is the brand that our mothers bought when we were younger.  Sorry, mom, it's time for a change.

So, here is the list of ingredients on the jar........

So, it took me all of 10 minutes to whip up this mayo with only 5 ingredients which I already had on hand.

Look at it.  It looks like mayo and would you believe it tastes like mayo!!!  What? What???

Before I open that brand new jar of Best Foods, I am going to test it on my hubby and kids. I wonder if they will know its not store bought mayo?

Here is the recipe for HOMEMADE MAYO !  It's delicious!

Ghost Story

I've been meaning to write this story for a few months.  I have been trying to figure out what exactly happened and I have really no explanation for it.

I'll just tell the story, the actual story and see what you think.............

Back in August, on the day my sister, my mom and I went to visit my father on the anniversary of his death.  An unexplained event happened while at the cemetery.  All three of us saw it.  All three of us talked about it and none of us can explain it.

My dad was cremated and his remains are in a wall, among others, on the far side of the cemetery.  Next to the garden is a small access road that is part of the cemetery.  There is also a beautiful aviation memorial that stands as tall as a tree and it is right next to the garden. It's a beautiful, quiet place.  We have visited many times and there usually isn't a soul around.  Until that day.......

We parked the car in our usual spot next to the beautiful garden area.  We slowly walked chatting with each other. I have always been curious of the aviation memorial and on this day I was even more curious.

The garden where my dad's ashes are

As we were all walking towards the garden, I glanced towards the memorial and noticed a man standing inside the tower of the memorial.  I had never seen anyone in there before.  I didn't know you could go inside.  It has a gate around it and it always looked locked.  The man was handsome, dark hair, maybe late 30's, early 40's.  He had a dark, cropped beard.  He was casually dressed.  I locked eyes with this man because I was a bit shocked to see someone in there plus my radar went off to be in protective mode.  I didn't know why the man was there.

This is the aviation memorial which stands right next to the garden.
I turned around to mention the man to my sister and mom.  The next thing I know the man is walking next to me.  I was shocked but not afraid.  I didn't hear him coming and I definitively didn't hear a gate closing, footsteps or anything else.   It surprised me to find him walking next to me.   By now, my sister and mom noticed this man.  They gave me a look of concern.

He struck up a conversation with me.  He was within arms reach of me but I still wasn't afraid.  He smiled and continued talking to me.  He was talking to me about the aviation memorial.  He told me there were ashes of people from aviation history buried in there. I asked him how he got in there.  He said the gate was open.  He said I should go visit and see it.  He never mentioned why he was in there.  He continued with the weather and why we were there at the cemetery.  All the while walking right beside me.  My sister and my mom heard the whole conversation.

I explained to him that the three of us were visiting my father for his 5th anniversary of his death.  He smiled and said I am sorry about that.  I returned with a smile and said it's okay and thank you.

I then began to turn towards the wall and garden area where my dad was.  I was following my sister and mom.  I realized that I did not say a final farewell and I had forgotten my manners.  Within seconds, I turned back to say good bye to the man.  He was gone!  Gone in a matter of seconds.  I heard no sounds.  I heard no words.  There was no one there.

I yelled ahead to my sister and mom and asked if they saw where the man went.  They said no.  We all got a little nervous.  There was no where to hide.  I looked back into the memorial and no one was there.  There was a fence nearby that lend to the outside of the cemetery and a street.  I ran over there to see if he jumped the fence, but wouldn't I have heard him climbing up a wall and jump over?  I ran over to the fence and peered through it, there was no one on the other side.  I walked a bit further to get another view and I saw nothing.

After our visit with my dad, I walked alone over to the memorial.  I walked right up to the gate.  There was no lock on it.  I opened the gate and it definitively made a noise, loud enough that my sis and mom asked if I was going in.   So, wouldn't I have heard the gate open if the man went through it?    I walked inside the memorial.  It was utterly quiet and yes there were gravestones on the ground with names of people from aviation history.  I walked around for a few minutes trying to figure out how that man got beside me so fast.  I can't explain that.

This is inside the memorial where I saw the man standing.

It was quite eerie but I also was never afraid.  Till this day, I have no explanation as to who this man was or what he was doing there?  All I know is that the three of us saw this man and had a conversation with him.   Something happened that day at the cemetery but I don't know exactly what happened?

Garden update

We are starting the late week of October here in Central California.  The days are still warm, in the 80's and the nights have started to cool off into the 50's.  Beautiful blue skies all around with fluffy white clouds drifting by.  It's my favorite time of year.

I thought I would take a moment and update my progress in my garden.

I know this will NEVER be ready by Halloween but just look what is happening.....we have a few pumpkins developing out in the garden.  It is really fun to watch how each day
you never know what you are going to find out there.

Look here.....the zucchini are growing nicely.
I can't wait to pick these and use them in a recipe or two.

I also found a few strawberries floating around under the green of the plants.
But, I have a little visitor in my garden. There have been visual sightings of a
little grey rabbit around in the backyard.  One day, I see the tops of my radishes and carrots and the next day they are gone.  I must be providing a very nice salad bar
for this wild bunny.  It's funny, you would think 3 dogs would sniff out this
rabbit but no, it's been in our backyard for quite some time now.

In October, I still have cherry tomatoes growing.

Also, green peppers......

The herb garden is doing nicely.  There is spearmint, peppermint,
rosemary, oregano and bee balm in there.

Briggor's 10th Birthday!!!

Briggor enjoyed a two day celebration for his 10th birthday!

The day before his birthday, Mark and I took him to a
Laker/Warrior pre-season basketball game.

The seats were right behind the team benches!

He danced, he cheered, he booed  and most of all, he smiled A LOT!!

This was Briggor's view for the evening.......

Briggor's two favorite NBA players - Steph Curry of the Warriors (blue)
and D'Angelo Russell of the Lakers (yellow).

On Friday, Briggor's actual birthday, he celebrated at school with his friends.
He requested to go to his favorite Friday hangout, Pizza Rev.  At Pizza Rev,
you can build your own pizza.

Then it was home to have birthday cake!

This is Briggor's best friend and neighbor, Jayden.  He brought over a birthday present.  It was a football and a kick off tee.

After the evening started to wind down, it was time for ki-ki burning.
Since Briggor was a baby, his favorite comfort was cloth diapers.

He has held on to a few.  As the days were coming closer to turning 10, we
were asking Briggor if it was time to get rid of the ki-ki's.  He kept saying yes!

We planned a ki-ki burning party for his birthday.

The night came and he welled up with tears.  It just broke his heart to
get rid of his comfort "blankie".

He asked if he could only burn one!  So we did!
