Welcome to my watering hole!

My mom sent this email to me today.  I loved the message.  It also reminded me of something.......I printed out the last email my dad sent me before he passed away.  Every now and then I take it out and read it.  Nothing fancy, just an article about air craft carriers.  But, to me, it means a lot.  That day, my dad thought of me!!!

Read the following:
An old cowboy was riding his trusty horse followed by his faithful dog
along an unfamiliar road. The man was enjoying the new scenery, when he
suddenly remembered dying, and realized that the dog beside him had been
dead for years, as had his horse. Confused, he wondered what was happening,
and where the trail was leading them.
After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall that looked like fine
marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch topped by a
golden letter "H" that glowed in the sunlight.
Standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like
mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like gold.
He rode toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to
one side. Parched and tired out by his journey, he called out, 'Excuse me,
where are we?'
'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.
'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked.
'Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right
up.'
As the gate began to open, the cowboy asked, 'Can I bring my partners, too?'

'I'm sorry; sir, but we don't accept pets.'
The cowboy thought for a moment, then turned back to the road and continued
riding, his dog trotting by his side.
After another long ride, at the top of another hill, he came to a dirt road
leading through a ranch gate that looked as if it had never been closed. As
he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and
reading a book.
'Excuse me,' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?'
'Sure, there's a pump right over there. Help yourself.'
'How about my friends here?' the traveler gestured to the dog and his horse.
'Of course! They look thirsty, too,' said the man.
The trio went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned
hand pump with buckets beside it. The traveler filled a cup and the buckets
with wonderfully cool water and took a long drink, as did his horse and dog.
When they were full, he walked back to the man who was still standing by
the tree. 'What do you call this place?' the traveler asked.
'This is Heaven,' he answered.
'That's confusing,' the traveler said. 'The man down the road said that was
Heaven, too.'
'Oh, you mean the place with the glitzy, gold street and fake pearly gates?
That's hell.'
'Doesn't it make you angry when they use your name like that?'
'Not at all. Actually, we're happy they screen out the folks who would
leave their friends behind.'
Sometimes, we wonder why friends forward things to us without writing a
word. Maybe this explains it:
When you're busy, but still want to keep in touch, you can forward emails.
When you have nothing to say, but still want to keep in contact, you can
forward jokes. When you have something to say, but don't know exactly how
to say it, you can forward stuff.
A 'forward' lets you know that you're still remembered, still important,
still cared about.
So the next time you get a 'forward', don't think of it as just another
joke. Realize that you've been thought of today and that your friend on the
other end just wanted to send you a smile.

PS: You're welcome at my watering hole anytime.

It's in the small things......

It's been almost 2 years since I was diagnosed with AML (Acute Myloid Leukemia).
Better known as blood cancer.
This nasty cancer almost took my life.
There was a time while fighting that I could barely walk, had no strength in my
arms and legs and just sitting was a chore.
Let alone trying to pick up a baseball was not going to happen
anytime soon.
I cried most days thinking I could never get back to the person
I was before I had cancer.
The fact is true, you really are NOT the same after you fight your
way through a battle.

A few days ago, I had a quiet accomplishment that made me smile and
brought tears to my eyes.
I was able to "play catch" with my
beautiful, wide-eyed little man
in the backyard for about 1/2 hour.

This same little boy stood at my ICU bedside in January of 2014
and bravely said goodbye to me.  Not fulling understanding what that
exactly meant to his little mind.  He just knew he was losing his mom.

But, there I was in the backyard, glove in my left hand, baseball in my right.
Coaching, instructing and laughing our way through "playing catch".
The simple game a catch made for a perfect day!

I am a little sore today from using those muscles but sore in a good way.
My heart is happy  that I am able to share
a good game of catch with my son.
I am thankful to a wonderful God that still performs miracles quietly
in our world and decided to choose me as one of his miracles.

I didn't really share this accomplishment with anyone in the family.  I didn't bring it up to
Briggs.  Just wanted it to be a normal day in the life of a little ball player preparing for
fall ball season.

But here I am, writing it down on this blog and sharing it!

Five Years

Today marked the fifth anniversary since my dad left this world and went to heaven.

I miss my dad. A LOT!  I still have so much I want to share with him.  I have so many more questions for him.  I still need his guidance and wisdom.  It's hard to believe that 5 years have gone by.

Some say he left too soon.  Some say it was time for him to go, he was tired.  What I would give for one more day with him!!!

I just miss him.  I run over and over in my head seeing my dad and having him call me "Mary-poo!"   I think about him every day!

My sis, my mom and I spent today together. My dads final resting place is at Valhalla Cemetery in North Hollywood. We visited with him today.  It's a beautiful quiet place.

It's a perfect place for my dad.  My dad was an aeronautical engineer for Lockheed so it's quite fitting that the airplanes fly over the cemetery.

I had my emotions in check today until my mom pulled out a piece of paper.  She read the following poem and I just let the tears flow.

The three of us headed to lunch after spending time with dad. It was a great day!  No matter how busy you are in life--it's important to remember!

Mark's Musings

I have stood over the greatest valleys and watched an eagle soar from above the clouds.

I have walked in the sand  at the edge of the world and smelled the salt air from the greatest sea and heard the waves all around me.

I have seen the great wild and the stood in the mist of the tallest waterfalls of a deep forrest.

I have been scorched by the desert sand and felt the unforgiving heat on my face.

I have felt the the soft kiss of a woman that rivals all the kings before me.

I have smelled the breath of my child in my arms.

I have witnessed mans greatest accomplishments.

I have had adventures of the body and mind.

I have tamed fire and drank from coldest streams.

I have witnessed new life and also seen life slip away.

I have led and I have followed.

I have looked into eyes and been lost to the ages of stories of love and devotion.

I have been praised and cursed.

I have won and I have lost.

Megan's First Job

Megan is off to her first day of work.  The first day of work in her lifetime.  She starts today at      Lucille's Smokehouse BBQ .

Megan is 17 and over the last two weeks she has had 2 interviews and a major test regarding the menu of this restaurant and one day of training.  The restaurant hired 4 people and only 2 passed the test regarding the menu.  Megan was one of the two people to continue on with the hiring process.

Here she is in her required uniform for the job.  She is the new hostess at the restaurant.

Walk to Beautiful......

I follow a website called The Reading Room.  It sends me recommendations for books to read all the time. The one below was recommended recently and I just finished it. It was a great story!  Moving and emotional at times. It's a true story about a country singer who grew up poor and in and out of foster homes.  It's a story of "survival of the fittest" for this boy to manhood and how he changed his life around to better himself and eventually give back to the world.

Today, Megan had her first senior event of the year.  The senior class enjoyed "Senior Sunrise" this morning.   Megan and friends arrived at school at 545am to watch the sunrise this morning.

Last night, the girls got together to make special shirts for the event.

Sunday morning in the garden.....

I woke up early this morning.  I drank my coffee, read my Bible devotion and played a few games on my iPad.

It is suppose to be over one hundred degrees today so I figured that this morning while it was cooler I should go work in the garden.

I tended to some weeds.  It seems those grow faster than the vegetables.  I pulled out some old lettuce and tilled the soil.  I picked my one radish.   I pulled a handful of green onions which smelled absolutely amazing!  I also pulled the last 3 kohlrabi from the soil.

In the other planter, I checked on my carrots.  It seems that we planted those pretty deep.  If you pull the green tops, it just breaks off.  So with a trowel, I dug around the carrots and found the tops and started pulling out carrots.  I think I am going to send Briggs out later to pull some more carrots.

There is this one spot in my raised bed that tomorrow's just have a hard time growing.  Right next to it, there is a cherry tomato plant that is thriving.  I just done get it. I continue to water so we will see what happens.

After I little more weed pulling and cutting back some herbs the garden doesn't look half bad.   Since it is August, we have to water twice a day.  So after all the tending the plants got a taste of water.

Here is my harvest from this morning.....
