Andrew is deploying for Kuwait on February 11th. He is in the process of getting a passport to get out of the country. He had to show the State Department his birth certificate. The same birth certificate that got him INTO the army is NOT acceptable to use for a passport. Doesn't the Army have some sort of connection to the government where They could get the copy of the "right" birth certificate? Too logical right?
Andrew is stationed in Colorado. He was born in California. He tried getting a birth certificate online but it will take 6 weeks to get to him. So, Andrew calls his dad asking for help. Mark talks to me and I am sent on a mission to get his birth certificate. I did not want to go to downtown Los Angeles. I let my fingers do the tapping on the Internet to find out what my options were. I found that I could go to the county recorders office in Lancaster for the certificate.
Yesterday was the day I planned to go. I asked Ryan to tag along with me. Both of us grabbed some coffee headed out the door. Filled the Yukon with gas and off we went.......We decided we would go over the hill via Tehachapi. It was a delightful drive.....talking, listening to music, and at times enjoying our own thoughts. I loved the one on one time with Ryan.
When we found the county recorders office and walked in...there were 2 people in line. Inside I was thinking this was going to be easy. But the inner voice was telling me that maybe this was TOO easy. Of course, it was the latter. Standing behind 2 people with my paperwork in hand, the lady in front of me turns around and asks me.....will we get the documents today? I said, I hope so. She proceeds to tell me her life story right there in line. GEEZ! Something about a guy she was married to for 6 months who turned out to be a felon who was wanted by the police for terrorism. She fled the state and never got her marriage certificate. Now her social security card with her name on it does not match her marriage certificate that is on file. She wants to cash her $10,000 social security check! Sounds like the making of a good movie! :)
Finally it was my turn at the window. After you asked for my drivers license and the paperwork, she typed in a few things on her computer and there it was on the screen - Andrew's birth certificate. I'll take 4 - I said. I wrote the lady a check. Held out my hand...... But, wait, hold on.....not so fast! Lady says.....your birthdate (mine she is talking about)...isn't very clear. We need to fix that. She says it looks smudged. Give us an hour and you can have your copies! :( I looked at Ryan, he looked at me.....we both said LUNCH TIME!!! The lady asked for my cell phone number and said she would call when they were ready.
Our daughter Nettie and her boyfriend, Matt, live out in Lancaster. So, I called her up and asked if she wanted to go to lunch. Ryan and I picked them up and headed to Black Angus for a nice lunch. I haven't seen them since before Christmas. All of us laughed, shared memories, ate some good food, and enjoyed each other's company. Checking my cell phone the whole time....no missed calls. HHHmmmm!
After dropping off Nettie and Matt, Ryan and I headed back to the County Recorders Office. I walked inside thinking I can grab the papers and head home. NOPE! Walked in and the lady behind the window had NO IDEA what I was talking about. The lady that helped me previously just went to lunch. WHAT??? Then this lady starts telling me that it may be tomorrow before I get the paperwork. WHAT THE HECK? I don't think so. She said the lady would be back in an hour. UGH! It was 130pm.
Ryan and I copped a swat in the Yukon for a nice afternoon nap. Ryan put headphones in his ears.....I dozed off with the sun on me. Then my phone rings....I'm thinking YES! They are done. NOPE! It was Andrew. He called to tell me about his award he received. Then he asked me where I was? LOL I'm in Lancaster getting your birth certificates that you so deperately need and you OWE me big time. Just kidding! Andrew said...I love you mom! Ok, all better I thought.
At 245pm, I walked back in there and saw the lady that helped me. She looked at me and said....they aren't ready!! Man, I was trying to hold it together. I said, I am getting these today right? Yes, she said....I'll call you when they are ready. What were they doing.....writing them by hand? So, back to the Yukon I go.......
About 20minutes later, my phone rings and she says they are ready!! Whew! I walked in, walked right up to the window, grabbed them and ran out the door. I ran like someone was going to catch up to me and say "hey lady, we need those back!" I don't think so.
Ryan and I headed for home. Not before I snapped a picture of it and sent a message to Mark and Andrew saying......MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
Through Mojave, up over Tehachapi and onward.......
